A Garlic grater and Brush Set hand made and hand painted in Cordoba in Andalucia. Known as a 'Rasca Ajo' in Spanish. It is made by our new supplier, Ceramicas del Rio Salado in La Rambla, Cordoba.
They are named from the Rio Salado, a tributary of the Guadalquivir river. The river flows through Cordoba down to Seville and on to the sea. The soil around La Rambla is rich in high quality clay deposits, making it ideal for pottery making.
The central part of the dish is scraped into sharp points using a small rake. The dish is then fired for the first time. After firing it is painted by hand with the twelve different designs before being glazed. The glaze protects the pattern and keeps the points sharp to make grating easy. A second firing ensures the glaze is hard and shiny.
As well as garlic cloves you can use the garlic grater and brush set to grate all sorts of other foods. Ginger, lemons for zest, parmesan, cinnamon, coconut and even chocolate!
